China Thursday inaugurated one of the world's longest bridges, which will provide an important new route intoShanghai, state press said.

Presented as the "world's longest sea bridge", the 36-kilometre (22-mile) structure connects Jiaxing city near Shanghai to the port city of Ningbo in the eastern province of Zhejiang.

It is slightly shorter than the 38.4-kilometre Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge in the southern United States, which is often billed as the world's longest.

The 11.8 billion yuan (1.7 billion dollars) bridge cuts the length of the road trip from Shanghai to Ningbo by 120 kilometres, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Construction of the six-lane bridge started in November 2003 in an effort to reduce traffic congestion in the booming area, Xinhua said.

Hundreds of people attended an opening ceremony on Thursday afternoon, it said.

The bridge was opened to traffic on a trial basis at 11.58 pm (1658 GMT), Xinhua said. However, officials did not know how long the trial would last, it added.

A 9,550-year-old spruce, the world's oldest living tree, has been found in Dalarna province of Sweden.

The specimen has survived by growing between erect trees and smaller bushes in pace with the dramatic climate changes over time.

For many years the spruce tree has been regarded as a relative newcomer in the Swedish mountain region.

"Our results have shown the complete opposite. The spruce is one of the oldest known trees in the mountain range," said Leif Kullman, of Umeå University.

A fascinating discovery was made under the crown of a spruce in Fulu Mountain in Dalarna. Scientists found four "generations" of spruce remains in the form of cones and wood produced from the highest grounds.

The discovery showed trees of 375, 5,660, 9,000 and 9,550 years old and everything displayed clear signs that they have the same genetic makeup as the trees above them.

Since spruce trees can multiply with root penetrating braches, they can produce exact copies, or clones.

The tree now growing above the finding place and the wood pieces dating 9,550 years have the same genetic material. The actual has been tested by carbon-14 dating at a laboratory in Miami, Florida.

Previously, pine trees in North America have been cited as the oldest at 4,000 to 5,000 years old.

In the Swedish mountains, from Lapland in the north to Dalarna in the south, scientists have found a cluster of around 20 spruces that are over 8,000 years old.

Although summers have been colder over the past 10,000 years, these trees have survived harsh weather conditions due to their ability to push out another trunk as the other one died.

The ability of spruces to survive harsh conditions also presents other questions for researchers.

World’s Longest Rail Tunnel In Kashmir

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra Wednesday conducted an aerial survey of the upcoming 10.96-km Pir Panchal rail tunnel, which is set to become the world’s longest railway tunnel.

Considered the longest in the Indian Railway network, the tunnel from Banihal in the Jammu region to Lower Munda in the Kashmir Valley is estimated to cost Rs.24 billion (Rs.2,400 crores). About 95 per cent of the work is complete and around Rs.22 billion has been spent.

Railways to set up 3 wagon repair centers

The railway project comprises three sections – Udhampur-Katra, Katra-Qazigund and Qazigund-Baramulla, taken up at a cumulative cost of Rs.110 billion (Rs.11,000 crores).

The Qazigund-Baramulla section in the valley will have 15 stations and the Srinagar (Nowgam) station is billed to be, architecturally and aesthetically, the most beautiful station of the Indian Railways.

After the aerial survey, Vohra reviewed the progress of the Jammu and Kashmir railway project at a meeting of officers here.

When he asked about the job opportunities the project would provide to Kashmiri youth, Northern Railway authorities told Vohra that once completed, it would generate direct employment for 3,900 people in the valley, apart from many opportunities for indirect employment.

Railway officials told the governor that appointment letters had already been issued to 120 candidates, who were now undergoing training in different parts of the country.

Vohra was informed that a trial run on the Kakapora-Pampore-Nowgam-Badgam track in the Qazigund-Baramula section had already been conducted. The train has air-conditioned coaches with heating system and push-back seats.

The Katra-Qazigund segment of the project will have the third highest bridge in the world over the Chenab river at Arnas in Jammu region. The special feature of this section is that 80 per cent of the 148-km track would be covered by tunnels and 12 per cent by bridges, thus leaving only eight per cent open.

For ensuring adequate security for the railway project, the state government Wednesday sanctioned the appointment of 2,637 security personnel.

World’s Largest Natural Bridge – Rainbow Bridge National Monument

Rainbow Bridge National Monument is administered by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, southern Utah, USA. Rainbow Bridge is often described as the world’s largest natural bridge. The span of Rainbow Bridge is 275 feet (84 meters), and at the top it is 42 feet (13 meters) thick and 33 feet (10 meters) wide. Two other natural arches, Kolob Arch and Landscape Arch, both also in southern Utah, have confirmed spans several meters longer than Rainbow Bridge, but by most definitions of the terms are described as arches but not bridges. With a truly impressive height of 290 feet (88 meters) Rainbow Bridge does indeed stand taller than either of its longer competitors, but it is outdone by Aloba Arch at 394 feet (120 meters), which is in turn dwarfed by the world’s tallest arch, Tushuk Tash in China at an estimated 1,200 feet (366 meters). While it may not be the tallest or the longest in the world, Rainbow Bridge is the world’s most famous example of a natural arch. Calculators and computers!
When we chased one another in the corridors in Intervals, and returned to the classrooms
Drenched in sweat!
When we had lunch in classrooms, corridors, Playgrounds, under the trees and even in cycle sheds!
When all the colors in the world, Decorated the campus on the Second Saturdays!
When a single P.T. period in the week’s Time Table,
Was awaited more eagerly than the monsoons!

SANTA MONICA, CA, USA –Freestyle motocross star Ronnie Renner jumped 59 feet, 2 inches on a quarterpipe on the Santa Monica Pier. setting the world record for the Highest air on a quarterpipe.

“I’m totally blown away that I went 59 feet,” said Renner, who was shooting for at least 50 feet. “I can’t believe the fan turnout. Everythi

ng was absolutely perfect. The fifth and sixth ones, I was giving it everything I had.”

Ronnie Renner went just over 54 feet on his third jump, then was just under 53 feet on his fourth attempt.After going just more than 53 feet on his fifth jump, he decided to do a last jump for the crowd.

“All or nothing,” he said. “I knew what I needed to do on the last one, all for the crowd. Way past my goal of 50 feet. I’m just pumped on this. Never jump when they say, ‘One more time.’ But I’m glad I did it — five feet higher and I rode away to talk about it.”

Renner rode up an 18-foot quarterpipe and made a sweeping, 180-degree arc that brought him down onto a landing ramp measuring 25 feet high and 64 feet wide.

The custom quarterpipe and landing ramp used by Ronnie Renner were designed and built specifically for Renner’s Red Bull Experiment. The ramp was modeled on the traditional dirt-based quarterpipe design, and built to specifications calculated from a dirt test site.

Ronnie Renner is a respected freestyle motocross veteran, whose credentials include a gold medal in Step-Up at the 2007 Summer X Games and until recently, the Step-Up world record (35 feet high). Step-Up is similar to a high jump, with riders attempting to jump their motorcycles over bars at ever-increasing heights.

Maddison jumped the length of a football field on New Year’s Eve, clearing 322 feet, 7 1/2 inches at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. On June 12, Robinson soared 27 feet above the lip of a huge quarterpipe in New York’s Central Park to set the BMX big air world record.

PLYMOUTH, UK — In a 1968 Vauxhall Viva. driver Dave Ackland, aged 39, from Keyham, drove on two wheels through a gap 67cm wider than the height of the car, at the Barbican Leisure Park, setting the new world record for driving a car on two wheels through the smallest gap.

The 39-year-old drove his black 1968 Vauxhall Viva through a 2.02m gap, beating the previous record by 1cm.

The difficult move, known as skiing, is considered the ‘Holy Grail’ of car stunts and has been used in two Bond films, and the US television series Knight Rider and the Dukes of Hazzard.

Mr Dave Ackland, a professional stunt driver from Plymouth, Devon drove over a ramp at around 8mph to flip the vehicle onto its rightside wheels.

Ready for the latest in spa pampering? Prepare to dunk your tootsies in a tank of water and let tiny carp nibble away.

Fish pedicures are creating something of a splash in the D.C. area, where a northern Virginia spa has been offering them for the past four months. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, said 5,000 people have taken the plunge so far.

“This is a good treatment for everyone who likes to have nice feet,” Ho said.

He said he wanted to come up with something unique while finding a replacement for pedicures that use razors to scrape off dead skin. The razors have fallen out of favor with state regulators because of concerns about whether they’re sanitary.

Ho was skeptical at first about the fish, which are called garra rufa but typically known as doctor fish. They were first used in Turkey and have become popular in some Asian countries.

But Ho doubted they would thrive in the warm water needed for a comfortable footbath. And he didn’t know if customers would like the idea.

“I know people were a little intimidated at first,” Ho said. “But I just said, ‘Let’s give it a shot.’ “

Customers were quickly hooked.

Tracy Roberts, 33, of Rockville, Md., heard about it on a local radio show. She said it was “the best pedicure I ever had” and has spread the word to friends and co-workers.

“I’d been an athlete all my life, so I’ve always had calluses on my feet. This was the first time somebody got rid of my calluses completely,” she said.

First time customer KaNin Reese, 32, of Washington, described the tingling sensation created by the toothless fish: “It kind of feels like your foot’s asleep,” she said.

The fish don’t do the job alone. After 15 to 30 minutes in the tank, customers get a standard pedicure, made easier by the soft skin the doctor fish leave behind.

Ho believes his is the only salon in the country to offer the treatment, which costs $35 for 15 minutes and $50 for 30 minutes. The spa has more than 1,000 fish, with about 100 in each individual pedicure tank at any given time.

Dennis Arnold, a podiatrist who four years ago established the International Pedicure Association, said he had never heard of the treatment and doubts it will become widespread.

“I think most people would be afraid of it,” he said.

Customer Patsy Fisher, 42, of Crofton, Md., admitted she was nervous as she prepared for her first fish pedicure. But her apprehension dissolved into laughter after she put her feet in the tank and the fish swarmed to her toes.

“It’s a little ticklish, actually,” she said.

Ho said the hot water in which the fish thrive doesn’t support much plant or aquatic life, so they learned to feed on whatever food sources were available — including dead, flaking skin. They leave live skin alone because, without teeth, they can’t bite it off.

In addition to offering pedicures, Ho hopes to establish a network of Doctor Fish Massage franchises and is evaluating a full-body fish treatment that, among other things, could treat psoriasis and other skin ailments.

Ho spent a year and about $40,000 getting the pedicures up and running, with a few hiccups along the way.

State regulations make no provision for regulating fish pedicures. But the county health department — which does regulate pools — required the salon to switch from a shallow, tiled communal pool that served as many as eight people to individual tanks in which the water is changed for each customer.

The communal pool also presented its own problem: At times the fish would flock to the feet of an individual with a surplus of dead skin, leaving others with a dearth of fish.

“It would sometimes be embarrassing for them but it was also really hilarious,” Ho said.

Through the ages, the Moon, our closest celestial body has aroused curiosity in our mind much more than any other objects in the sky. This led to scientific study of the Moon, driven by human desire and quest for knowledge. This is also reflected in the ancient verse. Exploration of the moon got a boost with the advent of the space age and the decades of sixties and seventies saw a myriad of successful unmanned and manned missions to moon.Following this, a hiatus of about one and a half-decade followed. During this period we refined our knowledge about the origin and evolution of the moon and its place as a link to understand the early history of the Solar System and of the earth.

However, new questions about lunar evolution also emerged and new possibilities of using the moon as a platform for further exploration of the solar system and beyond were formulated. Moon again became the prime target for exploration and a new renaissance of rejuvenated interest dawned. All the major space faring nations of the world started planning missions to explore the moon and also to utilize moon as a potential base for space exploration.

The idea of undertaking an Indian scientific mission to Moon was initially mooted in a meeting of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1999 that was followed up by discussions in the Astronautical Society of India in 2000. Based on the recommendations made by the learned members of these forums, a National Lunar Mission Task Force was constituted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Leading Indian scientists and technologists participated in the deliberations of the Task Force that provided an assessment on the feasibility of an Indian Mission to the Moon as well as dwelt on the focus of such a mission and its possible configuration.

The task force recommended that given the technical expertise of ISRO it will be extreme worthwhile to plan an Indian Mission to the Moon. It also provided specific inputs such as the primary scientific objectives of such a mission, plausible instruments to meet these objectives, launch and spacecraft technologies that need to be developed and suggested the need for setting up of a Deep Space Network (DSN) station in India for communication with the lunar orbiting spacecraft. The team also provided a provisional budgetary estimate.

The Study Report of the Task Team was discussed in April 2003 by a peer group of about 100 eminent Indian scientists representing various fields of planetary & space sciences, earth sciences, physics, chemistry, astronomy, astrophysics and engineering and communication sciences. After detailed discussions, it was unanimously recommended that India should undertake the Mission to Moon, particularly in view of the renowned international interest on moon with several exciting missions planned for the new millennium. In addition, such a mission will provide the needed thrust to basic science and engineering research in the country including new challenges to ISRO to go beyond the geostationary orbit. Further, such a project will also help bringing in young talents to the arena of fundamental research. The Academia, in particular, the university scientists would also find participation in such a project intellectually rewarding.

Subsequently, Government of India approved ISRO’s proposal for the first Indian Moon Mission, called Chandrayaan-1 in November 2003.

At 25 tons and 28 feet wide, the Babson World Globe was the world’s largest rotating earth-ball when it was built in 1955. But in 1993 it was restored, and has remained in global standard shape ever since.

After the Babson Globe established the record, bigger Earths were built to cast bigger shadows. A 30-foot-wide, rotating globe was built in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1957, and still stands in the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds, but it no longer rotates. A septuagenarian in the small town of Apecchio, Pesaro, Italy, built a 33-foot-wide rotating globe in the 1990s, but it’s unclear if it still rotates or if it even still exists — and are you going to go to Apecchio, Pesaro, Italy, to find out? May 19, 2009—Meet “Ida,” the small “missing link” found in Germany that’s created a big media splash and will likely continue to make waves among those who study human origins.

In a new book, documentary, and promotional Web site, paleontologist Jorn Hurum, who led the team that analyzed the 47-million-year-old fossil seen above, suggests Ida is a critical missing-link species in primate evolution (interactive guide to human evolution from National Geographic magazine).

(Among the team members was University of Michigan paleontologist Philip Gingerich, a member of the Committee for Research and Exploration of the National Geographic Society, which owns National Geographic News.)

The fossil, he says, bridges the evolutionary split between higher primates such as monkeys, apes, and humans and their more distant relatives such as lemurs.

“This is the first link to all humans,” Hurum, of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway, said in a statement. Ida represents “the closest thing we can get to a direct ancestor.”

Ida, properly known as Darwinius masillae, has a unique anatomy. The lemur-like skeleton features primate-like characteristics, including grasping hands, opposable thumbs, clawless digits with nails, and relatively short limbs.

“This specimen looks like a really early fossil monkey that belongs to the group that includes us,” said Brian Richmond, a biological anthropologist at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., who was not involved in the study.

But there’s a big gap in the fossil record from this time period, Richmond noted. Researchers are unsure when and where the primate group that includes monkeys, apes, and humans split from the other group of primates that includes lemurs.

“[Ida] is one of the important branching points on the evolutionary tree,” Richmond said, “but it’s not the only branching point.”

At least one aspect of Ida is unquestionably unique: her incredible preservation, unheard of in specimens from the Eocene era, when early primates underwent a period of rapid evolution. (Explore a prehistoric time line.)

“From this time period there are very few fossils, and they tend to be an isolated tooth here or maybe a tailbone there,” Richmond explained. “So you can’t say a whole lot of what that [type of fossil] represents in terms of evolutionary history or biology.”

In Ida’s case, scientists were able to examine fossil evidence of fur and soft tissue and even picked through the remains of her last meal: fruits, seeds, and leaves.

What’s more, the newly described “missing link” was found in Germany’s Messel Pit. Ida’s European origins are intriguing, Richmond said, because they could suggest—contrary to common assumptions—that the continent was an important area for primate evolution.
